1/13/2024 0 Comments Rivet press pinball![]() Because the tips of the punches are hardened, they work great as an impromptu rivet die.Ī complete set of Transfer Punches is $10 at Harbor Freight. Once the head bottoms out in the rivet, the pin will snap off. Q: I cinched the rivet down, but there is one little piece of metal standing proud.Ī: Just flatten it gently with the hammer.Ī: A Transfer Punch fits snugly in a hole, so when you tap it with a hammer, it transfers the exact center of the hole to another surface. Pop rivets work by pulling a pin with a bulbous head on it through the body of a tubular rivet. Although Pop Rivet Guns are great for pinball plastics (Pop metal is softer than regular rivet metal, so less wear on the ball) on targets, they leave a ball of material on the back of the rivet, interfering with the backing foam. If the target won't spin, you are tight enough (if you leave the target loose, it will wear the hole in the switch leaf, ruining it).Ī: No. Hanson Rivet sells a hand held rivet die. However, there are times when due to the location of the rivet, you just can't do it on the press. I also have basically the same press as above which works great. Two taps is all it takes, the rivet is very soft metal. The Pinrestore rivet kit is a great place to start until you get comfortable with the lengths you will want to use. You can't set a rivet on a wood workbench, you need something metal, like an anvil or the "anvil" on the back of a vise, to hammer against. Cant wait till I press a few rivets. Here you can ideally use a rivet die, or just a regular Transfer Punch. Came with a bunch of rivets of different sizes too. I dropped 5 on this one from Harbor Freight and it worked just fine for me. I asked around, but basically, short of buying a rivet press for big to get the factory 'authentic' rivet look, it didn't really matter. Since I do hundreds of flaps and switches now, I bought the 500 Hanson bench rivet press. I actually prefer the hammer and rivet punch over the modified arbor press. Oh, and a drill press clamp is going to prove to be priceless if you do try this at home. I had to redo the ramp on Maverick and I needed a rivet gun. I use to use the modified arbor press, but even with the longest squeezer, it just wasnt quite deep enough to rivet flaps on the end of a ramp without rubbing the side of the ramp. If anyone is going to be doing a full restore and swapping ramps and plastics, maybe you should go ahead and buy it but remember my cautions about the drill press. If anyone has a plastic they want riveted, save your money and send it to me and I'll press a few rivets for you free and send it back. If anyone lives local to me (southwest VA) and needs some rivets done, dont buy it. What should have taken me an hour or so took about 4 hours and a few scraped knuckles. Im just saying.Anyways, after much frustration and did I mention the various clamps and blocks? Got it together. B: If you dont have a floor model drill press, take it to a friends house or a machine shop and pay them a few bucks to do it for you or your really going to be stressing and a few cuss words may be thrown out there. I guess the point of this post is.If your going to try this yourself, either A: Make sure your drill press is a little bigger model than a regular home/shop model. I learned quickly that my drill press just isnt going to be big enough to do the drilling required! With a little ingenuity and a boat load of C-clamps and blocks of wood and turning my drill press base backwards I got the arbor press in there and drilled it on out. Break out the arbor press and get it ready. Theres actually a picture of what you get on the sight so not sure what I was expecting. Literally, a tiny bag of 8 bolts and a few other odds and ends. ![]() ![]() Well, first off, opened up the kit and was disappointed at the fact that for over $60.00 I got a handful of screws and the rivet bits. Thats the next step on my FH restore so gonna need it this week. Had an unexpected day off and figured why not. So, just ordered the kit from Pinrestore and got crackin on it today.
